Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has scaled up its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day, surpassing its official nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The achievement was verified during a performance test conducted by the process licensors of the refinery, representing a significant milestone in the operational advancement of the facility. This milestone further consolidates the status of the refinery as the largest single-train petroleum refinery in the world.
In an official statement released on Thursday in Lagos, the Head of Corporate Communications for the company, Anthony Chiejina, noted that the enhanced capacity underscores the robust engineering architecture and operational efficiency of the refinery. The statement noted, “It currently supplies both local and international markets, exporting products to several African countries as well as destinations in Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. The refinery has also supplied gasoline to the United States and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia. The refinery has emerged as a key stabilising force in the energy sector, particularly amid global supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East,” The publication added that several African nations now depend on the refining facility to support their respective energy security targets.
Speaking on the landmark development, the Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, disclosed that the refinery intends to scale up its processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next 30 months. According to him, the objective is to place the facility among the biggest refineries across the globe. Edwin stated that the project expansion would significantly boost the energy security of Nigeria, eliminate the reliance on imported petroleum products, and enhance the standing of the country as a major exporter of refined products. He added that the long-term objective of the firm goes beyond satisfying local consumption to becoming a premier refining hub for the African continent and the international marketplace.
Owned by prominent Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, the multi-billion dollar refinery commenced fuel production in 2024 and has progressively boosted its output of premium motor spirit, automated gas oil, aviation fuel, and other essential petroleum products. In April, S&P Global Commodities reported that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery had emerged as the largest exporter of jet fuel in the world, showcasing its expanding footprint in global energy spaces. The refinery has also played a critical role in improving fuel availability across Nigeria, thereby minimizing the reliance of the country on foreign refined products and helping to relieve pressure on foreign exchange reserves. This rising production scale has captured the attention of international crude oil suppliers and commodity merchants, with the facility drawing feedstock from both domestic and international producers.
Looking forward, the Chairman of the group, Aliko Dangote, has detailed strategic blueprints to push the refining capacity of the plant to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. The anticipated expansion is projected to yield massive economic advantages, including the creation of jobs, heightened industrial productivity, and improved balance of trade for the country. Furthermore, the refinery is expected to anchor downstream manufacturing activities by providing a dependable supply of liquefied petroleum gas, polypropylene, and other vital industrial feedstocks utilized in making consumer commodities and packaging materials. Future operational targets also involve the production of Linear Alkylbenzene, which serves as a core raw material in the manufacturing of detergents.
