The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, has called on the people of the state to reject the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections, describing the ruling party as a monumental failure that has brought untold hardship to the country. Emeka-Yellow, who belongs to the faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki at the national level, made the call during an interaction with journalists in Umuahia, the state capital, where he insisted that his party remains firmly on the ground and is prepared to field credible and people-oriented candidates for all elective positions.
The party chieftain argued that the APC government has overseen an unprecedented economic decline, rising insecurity, and a systemic decay of public institutions over the last eleven years. He lamented that millions of Nigerians are currently struggling to afford basic necessities due to skyrocketing inflation and high unemployment, while businesses across the country continue to shut down. He maintained that any government that has failed to improve the living conditions of its citizens for over a decade cannot be trusted with another mandate, adding that the ruling party has consistently undermined the independence of the judiciary and other democratic institutions.
Emeka-Yellow further alleged that there is a strategic attempt by the APC to frustrate the development strides currently being recorded in Abia State. He warned that a vote for the APC in the next election would amount to a vote for stagnation and regression, urging residents to be vigilant and ensuring that the state does not fall into the hands of the ruling party. He stressed the importance of political leaders in the state rising above partisan interests to defend democracy and called for a united front among opposition forces to resist any attempts to destabilise or dominate the political space through undemocratic means.
Addressing the leadership crisis within the PDP, Emeka-Yellow explained that the Turaki-led National Working Committee has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the lower court verdict that annulled its emergence following the party's Ibadan convention. He expressed optimism that the apex court would rule in their favour, providing much-needed clarity to the party's leadership structure. He also clarified the status of the state leadership, noting that a High Court sitting in Bende had removed the former state chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, in May 2025, leading to the current caretaker arrangement.
He urged loyalists of the party to remain calm and steadfast in their support for the Turaki-led leadership, assuring them that the PDP is being repositioned and reinvigorated to rescue the country from what he described as misrule in 2027. The caretaker chairman emphasized that the party's focus remains on delivering governance that prioritizes the needs of the people and restoring public trust in the political process. He concluded by extending a hand of collaboration to other political parties in Abia State to work together in safeguarding the interests of the electorate and ensuring a transparent electoral process in the coming years.
