The Nigerian Correctional Service has launched a manhunt for an inmate who escaped following a ghastly motor accident involving a vehicle conveying prisoners in Yobe State. The incident occurred along the Gashua to Damaturu road when the vehicle somersaulted after the driver lost control of the steering, creating a scene of chaos that the fleeing inmate exploited.
It was gathered that the vehicle was conveying several inmates from a court session in Gashua back to the custodial facility when the mishap occurred near the Jakusko area of the state. While security personnel and bystanders were occupied with rescuing the injured from the mangled remains of the vehicle, one of the prisoners managed to slip away into the nearby forest before a proper headcount could be established.
The Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed the development and stated that the other inmates were successfully secured and have since been provided with medical attention for the injuries they sustained during the crash. He explained that the command has already deployed a special task force to track down the escaped individual and is working in close collaboration with other security agencies to ensure a swift recapture.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public, particularly those residing in the Jakusko and Gashua axes, to provide any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitive. The service also assured that it is reviewing its transportation protocols to prevent a recurrence of such an incident while emphasizing that the safety and security of the public remain its top priority.
The escaped inmate, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, was said to be facing trial for serious offences before his disappearance. The wreckage of the vehicle has been towed away as part of an ongoing investigation into the mechanical state of the van and the circumstances that led to the driver losing control on the highway.
