Fulham have received a major boost ahead of their Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, with Nigeria international Calvin Bassey declared fully fit and available for selection after recovering from the back injury that had cast doubt over his participation.
Bassey had been a source of concern for the club after he withdrew from the Super Eagles squad for the March international friendlies against Iran and Jordan held in Antalya, with the back problem that forced him out of national duty raising fears that he might also miss Fulham's high-stakes clash with the reigning Premier League champions. Those fears, however, have now been firmly laid to rest.
Fulham manager Marco Silva confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the Nigerian centre-back had made a full recovery and was in contention to feature against Liverpool, providing a significant boost to the club's defensive options at what is arguably their most challenging away fixture of the season. The club also confirmed that all of their international players returned from the March break without picking up any injuries, further widening Silva's selection choices heading into the weekend.
Bassey's return is particularly important given his consistency and influence at the back for Fulham this season. The defender has started 21 of the 25 Premier League matches he has been available for, establishing himself as a cornerstone of the team's defensive structure. He has also chipped in at both ends, contributing a goal and winning a crucial penalty in Fulham's 3-1 victory over Sunderland in February, demonstrating his value beyond pure defensive duties.
Joining Bassey in Silva's available pool are fellow Nigerian internationals Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze, both of whom featured for the Super Eagles during the recent international window and returned without any fitness concerns.
