The Ogun State Government has indicated its intention to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of a stationary truck involved in the road accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua. State counsel D.O. Ogunyomi disclosed this development at the Sagamu Magistrate's Court while taking over the prosecution in the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV that was conveying Joshua and his friends at the time of the collision.
The prosecution also urged the court to consolidate the charges against both Adamu and Kayode, citing their respective roles in the incident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos to Ibadan Expressway. The court heard that legal advice from the state’s Department of Public Prosecution recommended that Kayode be prosecuted for reckless driving alongside the truck driver. Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun subsequently granted the request for the consolidation of charges and adjourned the matter to June 2, 2026, for further hearing to allow for the proper documentation of the new information.
The fatal accident took place near the Sinoma area of Sagamu when the SUV reportedly rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside while travelling from Lagos. Although the boxing champion sustained only minor injuries and was later discharged from the hospital, the crash resulted in the deaths of two of his close associates. The deceased were identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele, who served as Joshua's personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, described as the athlete's long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach.
Following the incident, the police arrested Kayode and initially charged him with a four count offence bordering on dangerous driving causing death as well as reckless and negligent driving. Investigators also alleged that he was driving without a valid national driver's licence at the time of the crash. The Federal Road Safety Corps had previously noted that the SUV appeared to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit during an overtaking manoeuvre before losing control and hitting the stationary truck.
The decision to charge the truck driver alongside the SUV driver signals a broader effort by the state government to ensure accountability for all parties whose actions contributed to the tragedy. Defense counsel Abiodun Olalekan, representing the SUV driver, had previously opposed multiple adjournments in the case, arguing that the prosecution was prolonging proceedings unnecessarily. However, the court maintained that the consolidation of charges was necessary for a comprehensive trial that reflects the roles of both drivers in the events that led to the loss of lives.
