The Department of State Services on Wednesday took former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai into custody shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
El Rufai, who is currently standing trial over alleged corruption charges, had just concluded a hearing on his bail application filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission when operatives of the DSS moved in.
Witnesses said the operatives escorted him into a waiting vehicle and drove him away from the court premises, with indications that he was being taken to Abuja.
There was a noticeable presence of security personnel around the court ahead of the hearing, which had earlier raised concerns that the former governor could be taken into custody after the session.
El Rufai had arrived at the court at about 9:05 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle, drawing attention from security operatives and observers present at the venue.
Following the proceedings, lead defence counsel Oluwole Iyamu confirmed that arguments on the bail application had been concluded.
“The bail application was argued and responded to, and the ruling has been fixed for April 14,” he said.
The development marks another turn in the ongoing legal proceedings involving the former governor, as attention now shifts to the court’s ruling on his bail application.
