Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully rescued 47 individuals, primarily composed of women and children, from an Islamic State West Africa Province enclave in Kangarwa, located within the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State. The decisive clearance operation was carried out by the military on June 20. The development was made public in an official statement issued on Monday by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni. According to Goni, the victims regained their freedom following a series of sustained and intensive military offensives targeted at various terrorist hideouts scattered across the volatile Lake Chad region.
In the official dispatch detailing the humanitarian breakthrough, Goni stated, “The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has recorded yet another significant humanitarian success with the rescue of over 47 persons, mostly women and children who were held captive by ISWAP terrorists in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State on 20 June 2026,” He further explained that the successful rescue mission was achieved through the combined execution of intensified ground assaults and coordinated air bombardments on fortified terrorist strongholds, which ultimately destabilized the criminal elements and forced the insurgents to rapidly abandon their tactical positions.
Elaborating on the strategic execution of the military operation, the military spokesperson added, “The successful rescue operation was made possible through sustained aggressive pressure and relentless offensive operations conducted by OPHK troops against ISWAP enclaves in the Lake Chad region.
The unrelenting ground and air offensives forced the terrorists to abandon their positions in confusion, enabling the victims to escape from prolonged captivity,” Following their extraction from the insurgent camp, the military authorities confirmed that the rescued individuals have been moved to a safe location where they are presently receiving necessary medical attention and comprehensive humanitarian care.
Regarding the welfare and ongoing care of the freed victims, the statement noted, “The rescued persons are currently being seen by medical professionals at a secure location. Necessary humanitarian support is being provided in coordination with relevant agencies to facilitate their eventual reintegration,” Goni emphasized that the successful rescue operation serves as a clear testament to the military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding civilian lives while systematically neutralizing the operational capacities of terrorist networks active in the North-East geopolitical zone. He stated, “This rescue further highlights the commitment of OPHK troops to not only degrade terrorist capabilities but also to secure the release of innocent civilians held against their will,”
The military officer concluded the dispatch by reassuring the public that the theater command remains fully determined to sustain its current momentum, track down fleeing insurgents, dismantle remaining sleeper cells, and permanently restore peace and stability to the affected communities. He stated, “The Theatre Command reaffirms its resolve to sustain offensive operations, dismantle remaining ISWAP networks and restore peace and normalcy across the North East region,” Borno State has continuously served as the primary epicenter of violent insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East region for over a decade, resulting in the displacement, abduction, and death of thousands of innocent civilians by Boko Haram and ISWAP factions. In response to the persistent threats, the Nigerian military has dramatically intensified its operations across the Lake Chad basin and the Sambisa forest axis in recent months to weaken terrorist groups and secure vulnerable communities.
