One person has been injured following the detonation of a suspected Improvised Explosive Device beneath a parked vehicle in the Oke Mushin area of Lagos State, sparking widespread panic among local residents. The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. at 22, Wey Street, Oke Mushin, when the owner of a gold Toyota Sienna, bearing registration number AAA11FX, attempted to ignite the engine after it had been parked overnight. The explosion prompted an immediate response from various security agencies, including bomb disposal experts and senior police officers, who quickly cordoned off the entire area to initiate a thorough investigation.
Speaking at the scene of the blast, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated the explosive substance had been intentionally planted underneath the vehicle. He stated, “The substance that exploded has been confirmed as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The owner sustained minor injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment,” Fatai further disclosed that operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted a rigorous sweep of the vicinity and found no other secondary explosive materials. He added, “Remnants of the IED have been recovered and taken for forensic analysis. The area has been certified safe, and there is no cause for alarm Mercedes,”
The police commissioner implored residents to maintain calmness and proceed with their lawful daily routines, emphasizing that security operatives are fully on top of the situation. He stated, “We will not allow criminal elements to gain a foothold in Lagos. Our borders are being monitored, and we remain vigilant,” A physical assessment of the scene showed that the vehicle suffered extensive damage, with its passenger side completely blown out and shattered glass fragments littered across the ground. Visible burn marks and remnants of chemical residue from the explosive substance were also observed on the affected vehicle.
Reacting to the incident, the Baale of Oke Mushin, Chief Tajudeen Lasisi Farounbi, explained that he received an urgent distress call shortly after the blast occurred and immediately contacted law enforcement authorities. He stated, “When I arrived, parts of the vehicle had been shattered by the explosion. I quickly informed the police and warned residents not to tamper with the vehicle before bomb disposal experts arrived,” Farounbi observed that the car had been consistently parked in that particular spot for roughly two to three months, though he noted that he possessed very little personal knowledge regarding the identity of its owner. Meanwhile, security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation to uncover the individuals behind the attack, ascertain the underlying motive for planting the device, and establish whether the explosion was a targeted assault or connected to a broader security threat. Law enforcement agencies have strongly advised members of the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious objects or unusual activities to the police as investigations continue.
