Spain booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a clinical 2-0 victory over France in their semi-final clash at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday. The high-stakes victory ended the hopes of the tournament-favourite French team of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final, as Luis de la Fuente’s side delivered a masterclass in tactical discipline and defensive organization.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute of the game when Spanish teenage sensation Lamine Yamal drew a foul from French defender Lucas Digne inside the penalty area, just a day after his 19th birthday. Forward Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to the spot and coolly converted the penalty past French spot-kick-saving specialist Mike Maignan to give La Roja the lead. The strike marked the fifth goal of the tournament for Oyarzabal and represented the first time either nation had trailed during their entire 2026 World Cup campaign.
Spain doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Tottenham defender Pedro Porro played a palatial one-two with Dani Olmo, taking the return pass impeccably before burying the ball in the bottom corner of the net past Maignan. The second goal left France chasing the game and allowed Spain to tighten their grip on the encounter. Despite throwing on late substitutes such as Desire Doue and Rayan Cherki, France struggled to break down a highly disciplined Spanish backline that successfully neutralized the star-studded French frontline of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, and Michael Olise.
Following the defeat, France captain Kylian Mbappe questioned the tactical approach of manager Didier Deschamps, suggesting that the team got their pressing strategy wrong against the dominant Spanish midfield partnership of Rodri and Fabian Ruiz.
Speaking after the match, Mbappe said, "We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s hard,"
The Real Madrid forward elaborated on the midfield struggles, stating, "Fabian and Rodri had plenty of time to play. There was a lack of communication on the press. I think we should have done man-to-man press and force them to run with us."
Mbappe admitted that Les Bleus failed both tactically and technically, allowing Spain to dictate the tempo of the semifinal.

The captain noted that Spain deserved credit for executing their plan, explaining, "When you don’t do what you have to do in a World Cup semifinal, you don’t win. He added, "In so many ways, France was missing everything today. Truly, everything was missing today. We’ll be back in four years, and we won’t make the same mistakes."
According to the official post-match report from FIFA, Spain successfully frustrated France at one end and punished them at the other to deservedly win their semi-final match. The football body noted that although France pushed hard in the closing stages, Marc Cucurella made an excellent challenge on Mbappe while Unai Simon acted astutely as a sweeper-keeper to protect the clean sheet.
While the defeat brings agony to the French squad, they will have a shot at the bronze medal in the third-place play-off scheduled for Saturday, where Mbappe could boost his hopes for another Adidas Golden Boot. Spain will proceed to the grand final on Sunday, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final match between England and Argentina at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
