Spain dominate Argentina to win 2026 World Cup

Spain have clinched the 2026 FIFA World Cup title following a dramatic 1-0 victory over a 10-man Argentine team at the New York/New Jersey stadium in the United States. The match-winning goal was scored by Ferran Torres during the second half of extra-time, shattering the ambitions of Argentina to become the first country to successfully retain the prestigious trophy since 1962. The South American giants suffered a major setback when midfielder Enzo Fernandes was dismissed with a red card during stoppage time of the regulation 90 minutes.

The final attracted high-profile global personalities, including the King of Spain, who traveled to witness his national team compete, while the President of Argentina remained in Buenos Aires to watch from home due to superstition. United States President Donald Trump and his wife were also in attendance in the stadium alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Spain created the first major opening of the encounter when a deflected strike from Lamine Yamal was blocked by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. On the opposite end, Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon raced 30 yards outside his penalty box to intercept Lionel Messi with a timely clearance. The European champions maintained their momentum into the second period, threatening within two minutes of the restart when Alex Baena intercepted a loose ball from substitute Leandro Paredes but shot straight at Martinez.

La Furia Roja applied relentless offensive pressure throughout the second half, forcing multiple saves from Martinez through dangerous attempts by Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Pau Cubarsi. The Aston Villa shot-stopper delivered an outstanding performance, registering 10 saves in total, including a crucial stop from a late Yamal free-kick to send the match into extra-time. With this feat, Martinez became the first goalkeeper in football history to record 10 saves in a World Cup final match.

In the first half of extra-time, Nico Williams put the ball in the back of the net for Spain, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul on Nicolas Otamendi during the buildup. Shortly after, substitute Mikel Merino missed a close chance when his glancing header went wide of the far post by mere inches. Despite a late attacking surge led by Messi in the final minutes, Argentina failed to equalize as Juliano Simeone blasted his shot high and wide over the crossbar. Spain successfully preserved their narrow lead to spark wild celebrations among their traveling contingent. Having previously won Euro 2024, Spain secured their second World Cup trophy, becoming the first European nation in history to win consecutive Euros and World Cup tournaments twice.
