Navy arrests pipeline vandals, recovers stolen pipelines in Imo

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted suspected vandalized crude oil pipeline sections and arrested suspected members of a pipeline vandalism syndicate in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. The development was part of the ongoing operational campaign of the security agency against economic sabotage in the country. The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this during a briefing on the security breakthrough.

According to the naval spokesperson, the operation was driven by intelligence gathering and was carried out by the personnel of Naval Base Oguta. While explaining the details of the raid, Folorunsho said, “The intelligence-led operation was conducted by personnel of Naval Base (NB) Oguta, leading to the interception of a Mercedes truck conveying 10 sections of crude oil pipeline suspected to have been illegally removed from the Addax Petroleum pipeline network along the Osu-Obodo Road corridor.” He added that the operation was highly successful in disrupting the activities of the economic saboteurs in the state.

The naval authorities confirmed that two individuals believed to be connected to the illicit operation were apprehended by the security forces during the exercise. Folorunsho stated, “The operation further resulted in the arrest of two suspects believed to be linked to the criminal network responsible for the vandalism.” He explained that the arrests were made during different phases of the operation, adding, “One of the suspects was apprehended while escorting the consignment, while another suspected member of the syndicate was subsequently arrested during follow-on operations.”

The naval spokesperson indicated that the military was still actively tracking down other collaborators associated with the pipeline vandalism gang. Folorunsho stated, “Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the network who remain at large.” He maintained that the prompt action of the naval personnel was crucial in stopping the thieves from moving the stolen materials, noting, “The timely interception denied the criminal syndicate the opportunity to evacuate the vandalised pipeline materials, thereby preventing further damage to critical national infrastructure and preserving evidence crucial to ongoing investigations.”

The military authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the oil and gas assets of the country to support the national economy. Highlighting the strategic importance of the operation, Folorunsho said, “The operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s sustained commitment to protecting Nigeria’s strategic oil and gas infrastructure through intelligence-driven operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks engaged in pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and other acts of economic sabotage.” He concluded by reassuring the public of the continuous collaboration of the agency with other security formations, stating, “The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in working with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to sustain pressure on criminal elements, protect critical national assets, and enhance internal security in support of national economic stability.”
