Gunmen kill army colonel in Abuja

Gunmen have shot dead a serving officer of the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corp, Colonel Abdussalam Ude, at his residence in the Kurudu area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The incident occurred on Monday evening when the senior officer, who hailed from Enugu State, unexpectedly ran into an ambush laid by the gunmen upon returning from work.

Military sources disclosed that the unidentified assailants opened fire on the officer following his refusal to allow them to abduct him or members of his family, which triggered a physical skirmish and led to the shooting of the officer and his wife.

During the encounter, the driver and security guard attached to the officer also sustained gunshot injuries and were subsequently rushed to the hospital alongside his wife for medical attention.

Before his death, Colonel Ude served in several strategic military intelligence and counter-terrorism roles within the Armed Forces and was due for promotion next year, with military authorities already commencing investigations to unravel those behind the attack.

In another development, the Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects over the alleged mob killing of a 25-year-old Jos-based model and University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as Ibee.

The suspects, identified as Rinji Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji, were apprehended following the death of the victim at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos.

It was gathered that Mbaya had attended a social event on campus before spending the night at the residence of a friend, who later accused him of stealing a missing iPhone.

Witnesses disclosed that the victim initially left the premises but returned after receiving a telephone call from his friend regarding the missing device, whereupon he was confronted and subjected to severe torture and beating for several hours with sticks and other objects by a group of young men in an attempt to force a confession.

The victim became unconscious during the assault, and a nurse invited to examine him reportedly confirmed that he had died before an attempt was made to transport him to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau State, Alfred Alabo, stated that the command received a report from a Good Samaritan around 11:20 p.m. on July 26 regarding an unconscious man brought to the hospital under suspicious circumstances.

Alabo explained that police operatives immediately deployed to the facility, where the victim was identified as Ibrahim Mbaya of Rayfield, Jos, but was confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty, after which his remains were deposited in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy while investigations continue.
