Gunmen attack INEC officials and steal voter materials in Osun

The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation following an attack on Independent National Electoral Commission officials in Odo-Otin Local Government Area by suspected armed hoodlums.

The spokesperson for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that about ten armed thugs invaded Oyinlola DC Primary School in Ward 2 while electoral officials were distributing Permanent Voter Cards. The assailants fired sporadically into the air and carted away three packs of PVCs.

State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan condemned the incident and ordered a comprehensive investigation to track down, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators. The command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while appealing to eyewitnesses and residents with credible information to contact the police.

Confirming the incident, Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, disclosed that Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices were also stolen during the attack. Oketola assured the public that the theft would neither disrupt nor compromise the electoral process, noting that replacement equipment will be provided.

The Osun State governorship election is scheduled to take place on August 15, 2026.
