The Federal Government on Thursday expressed satisfaction with the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by teachers in Oyo State, describing it as a triumph for dialogue and a vital step toward bringing back uninterrupted learning across public schools. According to authorities, the resolution was achieved following intensive deliberations involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Oyo State Government, and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers at the national, zonal, and state levels, which eventually led to the resumption of academic activities.
This was disclosed in an official press statement released by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, noted that the resolution of the crisis showed the determination of all stakeholders to prioritize the welfare and academic future of the pupils over other interests.
Alausa said, “I am glad to report today that the strike has been suspended. Teachers are now returning to school to educate their students. This is the result of our collaboration and coordination with the leadership of the National Union of Teachers and the Government of Oyo State,”.
The minister further commended the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for demonstrating exemplary leadership in ensuring the trade dispute was resolved through peaceful discussions. He similarly appreciated the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, the South-West Zonal Chairman of the union, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the executive members of the Oyo State branch for their respective contributions toward resolving the impasse.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Federal Government to providing continuous access to qualitative education, Alausa promised that the administration would maintain collaborations with all necessary stakeholders to keep students in their classrooms.
The minister stated, “Our children will remain in school, and we will continue to educate them. We will not succumb to terror. This administration remains resolute in confronting insecurity with every available resource and ensuring that our schools continue to serve as safe places for teaching and learning,”. He also lauded educators across the federation for their dedication and resilience in teaching the younger generation.
In addition, the Federal Ministry of Education renewed its pledge to partner with state administrations, teacher unions, law enforcement bodies, and relevant stakeholders to enhance security around learning facilities, promote open communication, and protect the right of every child to qualitative education under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. The suspension of the strike brings an end to weeks of paralysis in public primary and secondary schools across the state, which occurred after the Nigeria Union of Teachers ordered its members to stay at home due to safety concerns following the abduction of some teachers and pupils in the Oriire Local Government Area.
