A growing number of northern political stakeholders have expressed support for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his renewed commitment to serve only one term if elected president in 2027. The stakeholders described the proposal as a practical step toward achieving national unity and political inclusion across the country.
Supporters of the candidate argued that the one-term pledge reflects a willingness to prioritize national stability above personal political ambition. This comes at a time when issues of power rotation and equitable representation continue to shape the political landscape of Nigeria. According to his northern backers, the proposal serves as a confidence-building measure aimed at reassuring regions concerned about political balance. They maintained that the arrangement could promote a broader national consensus by providing a predictable leadership transition framework that accommodates the interests of both northern and southern political blocs. Many supporters viewed the initiative as a rare demonstration of political compromise in the often fiercely contested political environment of the nation.
They also cited the political record of the candidate as evidence of his capacity to honor public commitments. One of his advocates, Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin, stated that while public skepticism towards politicians is understandable, citizens should not assume that every political promise will be broken. Speaking on the issue, the Kano State Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, Dr. Muhammad Hamisu, stated that many northerners regard the candidate as a credible and trustworthy leader capable of respecting his commitment. According to him, confidence in the candidate is anchored on the belief that leadership driven by justice, fairness, inclusion, and accountability offers the most viable path to national development and prosperity.
Supporters further contended that the significance of the one-term proposal extends beyond the question of tenure, portraying it as a symbol of political accommodation, national reconciliation, and bridge-building across regional divides. They expressed optimism that the proposal could help foster a more inclusive political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly if it gains the backing of influential northern leaders who share the vision of a more united and equitable Nigeria.
