The National Pension Commission has inaugurated a free healthcare scheme under the Contributory Pension Scheme specifically targeting low-income retirees. Named PenCare, the welfare programme is designed to improve medical access for elderly Nigerians and minimize the financial burden of healthcare expenses during retirement.
According to a statement released by the commission, the initiative forms part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts to enhance the overall well-being, health, and dignity of senior citizens nationwide.
The pilot phase of the PenCare scheme operates under specific parameters to ensure benefits reach the most vulnerable retirees. The program is open strictly to pensioners who are at least 60 years old and receive a monthly payout of not more than N70,000 from their respective Pension Fund Administrators. Enrolment for the initial rollout is capped at 30,000 beneficiaries across the country, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The commission disclosed that the registration portal for the scheme has officially opened. Interested and eligible retirees can apply by scanning the official registration barcode published in national daily newspapers, visiting the official National Pension Commission website, or accessing the web portals of participating Pension Fund Administrators. The regulatory body reaffirmed that prioritizing the social and health needs of retirees remains a central focus of its mandate to ensure long-term retirement security.
