The Lagos State Government has disclosed its intention to launch a state owned drivers license in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to ensure sanity and safety on roads across the metropolis. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made the disclosure on Monday at the 2025 annual ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja.
Osiyemi explained that the project would provide an alternative for vehicle owners in the state. He stated that it is “optional for motorists to obtain either the federal license or the new state driver’s license.” The commissioner added that the initiative was aimed at enhancing safety and ensuring prompt issuance as against the usual delays being experienced with the existing process.
He further revealed that over 56,876 driver licenses were processed within the review period. This total comprises 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals conducted in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Osiyemi added that 1,158 international driver permits were also processed during the same period.
In an update on the railway infrastructure in the state, the commissioner noted that the first phase of the Blue Line project recorded 3.5 million passengers in 2025. He stated that the second and last stage of the project will be completed for full commercial operation in the first quarter of 2027. Osiyemi said, “Phase Two of the Blue Line extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko will be completed in the first quarter of 2027.”
