Reports of a Hantavirus outbreak aboard the expedition cruise vessel MV Hondius have raised concerns following the deaths of three passengers and several reported illnesses. While comparisons have been made to the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, public health specialists maintain that there is no evidence of a global health emergency or an immediate threat to Nigeria. The World Health Organisation confirmed that the first patient, a 70 year old Dutch passenger, was likely infected before boarding the ship in April. WHO technical expert Anais Legand clarified that the infection timeline does not suggest an origin on the vessel. She stated, “The incubation period, the time between infection and the onset of symptoms, is between one and six weeks, but it is typically more like two to three weeks.” She further added, “The man very clearly had exposure before boarding the ship. For this virus, there is no evidence that the disease can be transmitted to someone before symptoms appear.”
As of May 6, eight cases have been identified, including three laboratory confirmed infections and three deaths involving citizens of the Netherlands and Germany. Investigators suspect the victims were exposed to infected rodents while traveling in South America prior to the cruise. Resident doctor Godwin Ekweke noted that the transmission risk profile of Hantavirus is distinct from previous pandemics. He said, “Hantavirus infections are generally linked to environmental exposure to infected rodents, not widespread community transmission between humans. This makes the risk profile very different from what the world experienced with COVID-19.”
Dr. Chukwudi Ifeanyi urged the public to avoid panic and the spread of misinformation. He observed, “One of the major lessons from COVID-19 is that fear spreads faster than facts. People hear the word ‘virus’ and immediately assume another pandemic is starting. But every virus behaves differently.” He emphasized that prevention relies on environmental hygiene, advising citizens to, “Control rodents, maintain sanitation, store food properly, and avoid inhaling dust in rodent-infested places.”
In Nigeria, no official cases have been confirmed, though experts acknowledge that rodent borne diseases remain a concern due to sanitation and waste disposal challenges. Specialists believe that the country’s existing surveillance systems for Lassa fever provide a useful foundation for managing potential Hantavirus cases. Dr. Gbenga Owu noted that recent global health crises have led to significant local improvements. He said, “COVID-19 exposed many weaknesses globally, including in Nigeria, but it also accelerated investments in public health systems. Today, there is stronger coordination between laboratories, surveillance officers, emergency response teams and state health authorities.”
Dr. Owu however warned against complacency, stressing that preparedness requires continuous investment in diagnostics and border surveillance. He stated, “We must not become complacent. Preparedness requires continuous investment, especially in diagnostics, border surveillance, healthcare workforce training and risk communication.” He also pointed out, “There is always the risk of underdiagnosis when diseases present with common symptoms. That is why surveillance systems and laboratory confirmation are very important.” The symptoms of the virus initially resemble other illnesses, including fever and muscle aches, but can progress to severe respiratory or kidney complications.
Prevention measures include keeping homes clean, disposing of refuse properly, and sealing building cracks to prevent rodent entry. Dr. Owu cautioned that medical attention should be sought immediately if symptoms develop, stating, “Hantavirus can deteriorate very rapidly once respiratory symptoms begin. Early medical intervention improves survival chances.” Dr. Yusuf Bello concluded that there is no basis for alarm in Nigeria. He stated, “There is no reason for panic in Nigeria at this stage. But there is every reason to strengthen sanitation, surveillance and public health education because these measures protect against many diseases, not just hantavirus.”
