Team Ogun had a day of both triumphs and trials at the National Youth Games, Asaba 2024, showcasing their talents and resilience across various events.
The team's medal haul began with Abdulrasaq Abolaji, who claimed their first gold in Floor Artistic Gymnastics. Ogun continued to shine in the gymnastics arena, winning another gold in Artistic Gymnastics, and adding a bronze in Pommel Horse.
The Shooting events brought more glory to the team, with Ogun clinching 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Star shooter Atinuke Onabiyi made headlines by winning gold in the Female 10m Air Rifle, setting a new national record with a score of 502.1, and securing her spot on the national team for the upcoming Olympics. Onabiyi, along with teammate Idowu Tobiloba, added another gold to the tally, cementing Ogun’s dominance in Shooting. All three Ogun shooters have been invited by the Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) for their outstanding performance.
In Athletics, Ogun’s mixed 4×400m relay team and the male 100m team both earned bronze medals, contributing to the team’s impressive results.
Despite their successes, Ogun faced challenges in Table Tennis, with the male duo of Mubarak Balogun and Roqeed Bisiriyu losing to Oyo State, while the female team fell to Delta State. On a brighter note, the Para-Table Tennis team mirrored the national team’s Paralympic success, bringing home 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. Raji Aisha led the way with two silver medals in the Girls’ Singles and Mixed Doubles, while Tobi Ogunyemi secured silver in the Boys’ Singles.
Wrapping up Ogun's medal tally, Adams Makareem took home a silver in the Golf Strokeplay event.
Overall, Team Ogun put on a commendable display of skill and determination, celebrating multiple victories while identifying areas to grow as the Games continue.
