A professor of virology, Oyewale Tomori, has warned Nigerians on need to take adequate precautionary measures to tackle the third wave of COVID-19.
Tomori who maintained that the only solution to curtail the virus was for the people to get vaccinated, added that there was nothing wrong about the vaccine being produced in less than 18 months.
The expert, while speaking on the topic, ‘COVID-19 vaccines: the science, the myths, the facts at the 2021 annual scientific conference and workshop held at Babcock University , Ilishan Remo Ogun State said the testing rate of the country was not good enough.
The workshop was organised by Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Ogun State Branch.
His words, "Im saying with the nature of our great country , with the way we are behaving, the third wave is coming because we are country that doesn't have respect for those intervention, go outside and find out who's wearing mask except those of us that we are here before camera, when there's no camera before us how many of us will be wearing mask?
"Even in countries where they abide the measures, they are still getting waves.
He explained further that vaccines and herbal are two different things.
The professor stressed that herbal products are different from vaccines.
"In few years from now, Nigerian will be able to produce vaccines locally.
"I think we need to get NAFDAC involved do a proper analysis of the so call product.
"When Ebola, came , this same people said there are product that could cure Ebola, every herbal products should be monitored properly, check them for safety".
He therefore appealed to Nigerian citizen to take their second dose of Covid-19 vaccines because that will ensure full immunity adding that the first dose will not give factual immunity but better of with the full immunity.
"That's why they should go to get their second dose" he submitted.
In her keynote, the Comissioner for health in Ogun State Dr. Tomi Coker noted that the State as always been prepared for the third wave of Covid-19.
She said, "the State have a established a few isolation centers and also two laboratories in the state and they are functioning.We have been able to curtail the out break in Ogun State.
"What we tend to do is to test the community at the primary health care center and also encourage people to access vaccination at the primary health care center.
"There will not be a situation where people will have the first dose and not have the second dose.
"What we have now is the first batch that came into the country, the 4million as been exhausted in the country , however another batches of vaccines are coming in the next couple of weeks into the country
"Those who have the first dose will be invited back to have the second dose and there will be sensitization accross the media on this and it would encourage the citizen to come out and get their vaccines completed doses" she affirmed.
